Victorious “Chieftain Indians,” October 28, 1922
Back row, left to right: Dauss (Doss) Barger, Harry “Speedy” Kilfoy, Allen Mays, George “Babe” Ruth, Dick Price, Frank Dunda. Bottom row, Steve “Dunk” Sabo, Herb Kendall, Bill “Hook-ball” O’Conner, Bernie Jacklovich, Happy Kasel, Nick Badovinac. The two bat boys in front are not identified.
The occasion for this photo was an exhibition game between teams sponsored by the Pueblo Chieftain and its rival, the Pueblo Star-Journal. Babe Ruth played for the Chieftain, Bob Meusel for the Star-Journal; the two were on a post-season barnstorming tour through the midwest. The Chieftain team won!
The game was played at Merchant’s Park, behind the J.S. Brown Mercantile building (later the Weicker Transfer and Storage warehouse at 132 S. Main). Although the field had been covered by 8–10 feet of water during the previous summer’s flood, considerable reclamation work had been done.
